Porto Dos Santos Tawny

Essence of the wine

Porto dos Santos takes its name from the fusion between the tradition of Port wine and the spirit of the estate where it is produced. The term "dos Santos" symbolizes the connection to the land and the heritage of the region, reflecting the care and dedication with which this dessert wine is crafted. A fortified wine with character and complexity, it is ideal for accompanying special moments and all kinds of desserts.

Variety

Native grape varieties from the Porto region include Touriga Nacional, Tinta Amarela, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, and Tempranillo.

Terroir

The terroir of Porto, located in the Douro Valley, is characterized by a warm, dry climate, slate-stony soils, and vineyards planted on steep terraces, which promote optimal grape ripening. Indigenous varieties such as Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz, combined with barrel aging, result in wines of great complexity and aging potential. This unique environment gives rise to Tawny wines, renowned for their deep concentration of flavors and rich minerality.

Winemaking Process

Once the blending (coupage) of each grape variety is complete, fermentation begins. When the desired alcohol level is reached, grape spirit is added until the wine reaches 19% alcohol by volume. This process preserves part of the grapes’ natural sugar, the fruity aromas of the grape, the fermentation notes, and the wine’s structure. After fermentation, the wine is transferred to oak barrels, where it undergoes an aging process that lasts several years. This maturation in oak allows the wine to develop aromatic complexity, with notes of dried fruits, ripe fruits, and hints of wood. Finally, the wine is bottled, where it continues to mature, refining its character.

Appearance

The wine presents a clean and bright appearance, with an attractive dark ruby color. Its deep hue is indicative of its complexity and aging process, which lends it visual and sensory intensity.

Aroma

On the nose, Dos Santos reveals the distinctive characteristics of the grape varieties native to the Porto region. Refined, mature notes enhanced by years of aging in oak barrels create an elegant blend of dried fruits, delicate spices, and subtle hints of wood.

Taste

On the palate, it delivers the region’s signature flavor, with a balanced and enveloping sweetness. Its full body and soft tannins give it a round and pleasant texture, offering a long-lasting sensation reminiscent of ripe fruits, nuts, and a subtle touch of spice. The smoothness of the Tawny, combined with its complexity, makes it an ideal wine to savor slowly and appreciate its evolution on the palate.
